Q & A with a Super Hero: Medicine Matters... Really.
9/12/14
This is a super touchy subject for many families with blessed children. The pill path is a slippery slope of chemicals, doctors, and balance. It can add stress, side effects or opportunities for your child to learn. We started meds in kindergarten after signs of growing aggression and don't regret making this world accessible for Jake one bit. They cannot learn until their brains are calm and available. Why not try every tool to get there?
Don't listen to me... just read Jake's side of the story and decide for yourself.
Jakeman, let’s talk about your pills.
Do you like to take medicine?
Yes.
Why?
Because it helps me stay calm and organized. It helps more than the supervest.
Can you feel a change in your body after you take the pills?
Yes.
What does it feel like?
Different.
How?
I don’t know how to say it.
Listen to this: In the morning when you first get up your body is running really fast… correct?
Yes it does.
What happens to your body in the morning after you take your pills?
I’m still out of control.
Do they help you get in control?
Yes, but I think I need stronger pills that will help me focus a little faster than the other ones because the ones aren’t working.
Why do you say the pills are not working?
Because I’m not calm all the time and following the directions. The Risperdone and the green circle one are not working to help me. But the white one does.
How does the white one (Depakote) help you?
It helps me the same way… same way as what?.... as before... so I don't want to hit.
Can you feel a difference in your brain after you take medicine?
Yes.
Like what?
The oils in my regular brain make me feel like I’m getting out of control first, and then it gets calmer, and calmer and calmer.
Would you like to be off of medicine?
NO... NO.... No.. and shaking head.
Why?
Because it helps me… medicine helps me because I’m a fast boy and my body goes super-fast. The medicine and the vest help me… and the weighted blanket. Those strategies all together help me. But I would like stronger pills to help me relax.
Does your medicine make feel silly at all?
No.
When mommy and the doctor say “one day we want to be off medicine” how does that make you feel?
Sad.
Why?
Well it’s cool that I have medicine and it helps me.
Do you think you could live safely without it?
Hhhmmm... I don’t think I’m ready for that. It could take a long time, or we won’t even try it. It depends what the doctor says.
Anything else you want to add?
It keeps me stabilized and I try very hard and focus on my work when I use my medicine.
What do you think about kids that don’t have any medicine to help them?
I think that’s sad and I’m sad about them. I don’t like to hear it that makes me sad. I’m not going to cry but I’ll be real upset. It helps me.
Kiss your brain baby… that was amazing.
